EAA Chapter 284 will hold its December 2009 meeting on Sunday, December 13, 2009, at 2 PM at Red Stewart Airfield, Waynesville OH.

Chapter Business -  Election of Officers
Any one interested in hold a chapter office for 2010 please volunteer at the meeting or reply to me by email before the meeting.

Needed – Young Eagle Coordinator
Ideally the YE Coordinator should be someone from the community with ties to youth organization, schools or civic groups. The YE Coordinator can either contact groups or receive requests for YE rides. The YE coordinator can also try and recruit additional pilots to fly YE with us. Actually this is something all members can do. In the past we have attempted to hold a YE rally at the TDFI. This has worked, but has really strained our resources. Keith has suggested that we choose one or more dates during the good weather months to schedule YE rallys. The YE Coordinator serves as the chapter planner and contact person. There is no reason why we can’t all find some way to assist the YE coordinator with the Young Eagles program.

It’s great to see active EAA members and particularly nice when they are members of our chapter. One such member, Steve DiLullo, headed down to Tampa for the “first-ever AOPA Summit” and posted a nice write-up with a few photos on his blog. Here’s a good photo with Steve and the well-known aviation educators John and Martha King.

At the November 8th EAA284 chapter meeting we will show a video of Mark’s successful flight, preparations for the second flight, as well as footage of the crash (see previous post).  There will be some discussion of the problems the Wright encountered with pitch instability, as well as the measures they too to solve this problem.

On October 1, 2009 Mark Dusenberry was engaging in practice flights in preparation for the 104^th commemorative celebration of the Wright Brothers demonstration of the first practical aircraft, their 1095 Model III Flyer. Mark completed one successful flight in the morning.

During his second flight of the day the aircraft began a series of pitch oscillations, finally striking the ground in a nose down attitude. In the 1905 Flyer the pilot is not strapped in. He lies on the lower wing. Photos of the impact clearly show Mark sliding forward on the wing.

Mark sustained significant injuries in the crash. He was taken to Miami Valley Hospital by Care Flight. Initially, he was listed in critical condition. He underwent two surgeries that night. His condition subsequently improved. He has been transferred to a hospital in Cleveland to be closer to family and to continue a rehabilitation program. The last report I received indicated that he had no feeling below the waist.

As a result of his injuries Mark will have a long period of rehabilitation and will incur large medical bills, not covered by insurance. Donations can be sent to Mark’s sister Lori. This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed.

On October 1, 2009, at 1100 eastern daylight time, an experimental 1905 Wright Flyer, collided with the terrain following a loss of control shortly after taking off from the Huffman Prairie Flying Field at the Wright-Patterson AFB (FFO), Dayton, Ohio. The pilot received serious injuries. The airplane received substantial damage to the fuselage, wings, and elevator. The flight was being operated under Title 14 code of Federal Regulations Part 91. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The flight originated just prior to the accident.

John Belluardo and his wife Barbara recently flew their vintage 1946 Luscombe Silvair 8A Luscombe 8A “Buster” down the Hudson River over the George Washington Bridge. The flight was one of John’s lifetime dreams as he flew his “Buster” past New York City and out into New York Harbor. His flightpath took him over the Verrazano Narrows Bridge and past his  birthplace. Thanks for the email.

The Wright Image Group is a Dayton based organization that proposed to build a monument to the Wright Brothers at the intersection of Interstates 70 and 75, commemorating Dayton as the birthplace of aviation. EAA Chapter 284’s 2nd Annual Fly In, Drive In Picnic will be held Sunday October 11th at Ross Airfield, just east of Greenfield OH. The meeting time is nominally 2 PM, but you can arrive as early as 1 PM. I will provide hamburgers, all beef hot dogs and bratwurst as well as buns. Bob Wilson ’s wife will provide the pies. I will ask outer to brings side items such as chips, salads, potato salad and drinks. I think that we have plenty of foam plates, plastic ware, cups and napkins at the hanger. If someone would volunteer to bring some that would be great. Feel free to invite family and friends Bob has both is Tailwind and Pietenpol at the airfield.

Our chapter’s Taildragger Fly In and Pancake Breakfast for 2009 was a great time and big success. A big thanks to all who flew or drove to Red Stewart Field and enjoyed  the great weather, good food and collection of airplanes. We look forward to seeing you next year and at other events around the area. Keep in mind that our chapter’s “kitchen” is available to rent to your EAA chapters’ events.

Be sure to fly – or drive — in for breakfast on Sunday morning September 6th for our chapter’s Annual Taildragger Fly-In Pancake Breakfast. Better yet, spend the night camping under your plane at Red Stewart Field  Saturday and enjoy the late afternoon/evening airshow.
