de Havilland DH-4 used to transport U.S. Mail - Airmail

An EAA member pointed out the exhibition and interactive website “America by Air” which is part of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s site and its a good way to spend an hour or two learning some aviation history. In the above photo, the  de Havilland DH-4 WWI planes and pilots transported a 400 pound U.S. Mail  payload in 13 segments across the country in 28 hours.  It must have been an exciting time to be flying taildraggers by the seat of your pants. If you ‘really like grassroots aviation,’ check out the America by Air Exhibition.
