On October 1, 2009 Mark Dusenberry was engaging in practice flights in preparation for the 104th commemorative celebration of the Wright Brothers demonstration of the first practical aircraft, their 1095 Model III Flyer. Mark completed one successful flight in the morning.
During his second flight of the day the aircraft began a series of pitch oscillations, finally striking the ground in a nose down attitude. In the 1905 Flyer the pilot is not strapped in. He lies on the lower wing. Photos of the impact clearly show Mark sliding forward on the wing.
Mark sustained significant injuries in the crash. He was taken to Miami Valley Hospital by Care Flight. Initially, he was listed in critical condition. He underwent two surgeries that night. His condition subsequently improved. He has been transferred to a hospital in Cleveland to be closer to family and to continue a rehabilitation program. The last report I received indicated that he had no feeling below the waist.
As a result of his injuries Mark will have a long period of rehabilitation and will incur large medical bills, not covered by insurance. Donations can be sent to Mark’s sister Lori. Checks should be made payable to The Citizens Bank. On the memo line indicate “Mark Dusenberry” Checks can be mailed to Mark’s sister, Lori at the following address.

EAA Chapter 284’s 2nd Annual Fly In, Drive In Picnic will be held Sunday October 11th at Ross Airfield, just east of Greenfield OH. The meeting time is nominally 2 PM, but you can arrive as early as 1 PM. I will provide hamburgers, all beef hot dogs and bratwurst as well as buns. Bob Wilson ‘s wife will provide the pies. I will ask outer to brings side items such as chips, salads, potato salad and drinks. I think that we have plenty of foam plates, plastic ware, cups and napkins at the hanger. If someone would volunteer to bring some that would be great. Feel free to invite family and friends Bob has both is Tailwind and Pietenpol at the airfield.
We will meet at Red Stewart Airfield at 2PM August 9th and will be planing for our annual Tail-Dragger Fly-In which will be held Sunday September 6th. Bob Luken will also be bringing the trailer for the kitchen equipment to develop a loading plan. This will enable the chapter to rent the entire kitchen as a means of making money.
Hopefully we can get cooperation from other chapters to conduct a Young Eagle Rally. We will need to look at the sound system requirement for the open house and air show on Saturday as well as Fly In on Sunday. I believe that we have a renter for the hanger. If this works out it will improve our finances.
We are a small chapter so participation by all is necessary to make the Fly In a success. Aviation enthusiast from the are regard the Tail Dragger fly in as one of the best events in the region.
The next meeting of EAA Chapter 284 will be Sunday June 14, 2009 at 2 PM. (Location Red Stewart Airfield) Bob Luken will continue his talk about the Stewart Finishing System. He is planning on having several practice panels with. His intent is to have on panel covered through primer and one panel with the fabric just glues and shrunk. Bob is also trying to get a plane owner who recently finished his aircraft with the Stewart System to bring his plane and offer insight on the Stewart System.
Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter (EAA284) met at a new shop of one of our members today for our May meeting. We had a chance to both work on projects for our chapters ‘rentable kitchen’ and to learn a bit about welding. We enjoyed a beautiful day in Waynesville, Ohio while discussing the summer flying season (and events) in Dick Elliot’s new outbuilding. He has equipment that would be the envy of most experimental airplane builders and the skills to go along with them (lacking for yours truly).
The May meeting of EAA Chapter 284 will take place at 2 PM on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Dick Elliot’s new workshop on South 4th Street in Waynseville Ohio. Besides working in grill stands for our kitchen equipment, we will be discussion chapter business issues such as Hanger Rent, Dayton Airshow support, Oshkosh/Airventure, Dayton Oshkosh Air-race and Young Eagles will also be discussed.
